The surf on the South CoastSurf spots here work in the dry season from about October thru March. Its pretty much constant 3-5ft long-period clean swell with occasional bigger days. Its the tropics, so winds are gentle offshore every morning and the water is warm. In the monsoon season - April thru September - it is offshore on the East Coast. Arugam Bay and other points around there work at this time. On the South Coast during monsoon you can also find waves at protected points like Mirissa. Surf this beautiful point with the resident turtles! So there is good surf in Sri Lanka year-round. These are the main spots along the South-West and South Coasts.
Surf spots going south from HikkaduwaHikkaduwa Reef: The A-frame reef at Hikkaduwa can get very good in season, with a barreling left and right. Rajgamma Reef: There is a good left reef break at Rajgamma village. Unawatuna Point: The right point at Unawatuna is mediocre. It could be better except for an irritating section in the wave. Nonetheless it is good experience sitting in the water right next the the Buddhist temple on the point. You can get waves here in monsoon season too. Kabbalana Point: There is a left point break in from of the Kabbalana Hotel. Ahangama Reefs: There are surfable waves on the reefs at Ahangama. Midigama Point: The point break at Midigama can get good with the right swell direction. Plantation Point: After Midigama you’ll find Plantation Point through a coconut grove between the road and sea. This point can also get good. Welligama Beach Break: Welligama has great beach break waves for beginners at the south end of the bay. Mirissa Point: Mirissa has a great right point which has good waves if the swell direction is right. Waves wrap into an exquisite little bay. It also offshore during monsoon. It is an excellent beach to chill out on and a handful of beach shacks at the point which serve delcious calamari. Bay Moon is a good one.
